How to Make Labels in Google Docs

Label Maker is a Google Docs add-on that lets you create professional mailing labels in minutes. This guide walks you through the basics of creating your first labels.

Step 1: Install Label Maker

First, you need to install Label Maker from the Google Workspace Marketplace:

  1. Open Google Docs and create a new document
  2. Click Extensions in the menu bar
  3. Select Add-onsGet add-ons
  4. Search for "Label Maker" and click Install
  5. Grant the necessary permissions when prompted

Tip: You can also install directly from the Google Workspace Marketplace.

Step 2: Open Label Maker

Once installed, open Label Maker from the Extensions menu:

  1. Click ExtensionsLabel MakerCreate Labels
  2. The Label Maker sidebar will appear on the right side of your document

Step 3: Choose a Label Template

Label Maker supports 5,000+ templates from major brands:

  • Avery - US and international formats (5160, 5163, 8160, etc.)

To select a template:

  1. Click on the Template dropdown in the sidebar
  2. Search by brand name or product code (e.g., "Avery 5160")
  3. Or search by dimensions (e.g., "2x4 inch")
  4. Click on your preferred template to select it

Step 4: Design Your Label

After selecting a template, you can design your label content:

  1. A label template will be inserted into your document
  2. Click inside any label cell to add your text
  3. Use Google Docs formatting tools to style your text (fonts, sizes, colors)
  4. Add images by clicking InsertImage

Formatting Tips

  • Center-align text for a professional look
  • Use a readable font size (10-12pt for address labels)
  • Leave some padding from the label edges
  • Test with a single label before printing a full sheet

Step 5: Create Your Labels

Once you're happy with your design:

  1. Click the Create Labels button in the sidebar
  2. Label Maker will generate a new document with your labels
  3. Review the output before printing

For perfect alignment when printing:

  1. Go to FilePrint (or press Ctrl/Cmd + P)
  2. In the print dialog, set Margins to None
  3. Ensure Scale is set to 100% or Actual size
  4. Do a test print on regular paper first
  5. Hold the test print against your label sheet to check alignment

Important: Always set margins to "None" in print settings. Default margins will cause your labels to print offset.
